| Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis). The black rhino is found in the thorn scrublands and open woodlands of southern and eastern Africa. It feeds on vegetation using its prehensile upper lip to manipulate the foliage. Like all rhinos,it has poor eyesight,but excellent senses of smell and hearing. The front horn is larger,and can reach a length of 1.5 metres. The black rhino is usually a solitary animal. It can weigh over 3 tonnes,and must be approached with caution: due to its poor eyesight it will charge without provocation at any threatening object,reaching speeds of over 50 kilometres an hour.
