Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli) foal baring its teeth. This is a form of communication, possibly a warning signal to another zebra. The Burchell's or plains zebra is a wild horse that lives on the vast open plains of Africa. Herds of several hundred individuals may have a territory of several square kilometres. The zebra has a gestation period of around one year, and the foal stays with its mother's herd. The zebra is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions.
