Plains zebra. Galloping herd of plains (or Burchell's) zebra (Equus burchelli) on savanna. The plains zebra is a wild horse which lives on the vast open plains of eastern Africa. It lives in herds of several hundred individuals, each herd having a large territory covering several square kilometres. A herd often associates with other grazing herbivores, such as wildebeest and antelopes. The plains zebra mainly eats grass, but also eats shoots and leaves. It is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions, but can run fast for long distances and can also put up a powerful fight if caught. Photographed in the Okavango Delta,Botswana | |
