Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) cub, blurred image. The cheetah is almost exclusively found in the African savannah regions and the southern deserts. It is the fastest sprinter of the cats, and the fastest land mammal. It can reach speeds of over 110 kilometres per hour, but only in short bursts. It sprints to catch its prey of small deer. It is a small, thin cat, with a body length of around 1.3 metres, and so hunts by day to avoid the larger nocturnal hunters such as lions and hyenas. Cheetahs are endangered by hunting and also due to low genetic diversity. Photographed in the Kalahari Desert,South Africa | |
