Lion. Male lion (Panthera leo) standing on a rock. Males are distinguished by the large dark manes around their necks. Lions are the only cats in which the males and females look obviously different. Lions inhabit the savanna and scrub of southern and eastern Africa, and parts of southern Asia. They are the only truly social cat, living in large groups (prides) of about 20 individuals, including two or three males, several females and their young. Their prey typically consists of large herbivores such as antelopes and zebra. Hunting in a pride is usually done by groups of lionesses, and prey is shared between all members of the pride | |
