Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri). This heavily-built penguin inhabits the coasts of Antarctica. It comes ashore in the winter to mate, breeding in colonies on the ice. The male incubates the egg for two months, huddling in a group to stay warm. During this time the female returns to the sea to catch fish in order to feed the chick once it has hatched. The penguin is flightless and uses its wings to swim through the water after fish and squid. It toboggans on its stomach to cover distance on ice. Photographed in Antarctica | |
