Deer tick. Scanning macrophotograph of a deer tick (Ixodes dammini,or scapularis). This tick can transmit Lyme disease to humans. It feeds on the blood of warm-blooded animals,including humans,using its piercing mouthparts (lower centre). Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi,and symptoms include skin lesions,cardiac and neurological abnormalities,and arthritis. Lyme disease is carried by this tick in the northern and central USA,and by Ixodes ricinus in Europe. Magnification: x14 at 6x9cm size
