Dust mite. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a dust mite (order: Acarina). At centre is the head; four pairs of walking legs are seen; the body is smooth and has a few hair for touch. These tiny relatives of spiders feed on the dead scales on human skin in household dust. Shorter than 1.2 millimetres long, they are invisible to the naked eye but exist in their millions through- out the home, crawling through the fabric in furniture and carpets in search of food. The average double bed contains about two million dust mites of various species. Their dead bodies and excrement are thought to cause asthma and an allergy to household dust.
