LIBRARY Dog tick. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts of an unidentified species of dog tick. This parasite feeds on the blood of dogs. Ticks are arachnids,with characteristic arachnid mouthparts born on the basis capituli (lower half of the image). They consist of a pair of chelicerae with mobile digits adapted for cutting and a pair of sensory palps. These lie either side of the toothed hypostome (coloured grey) which maintains position during feeding. The hypostome bears a dorsal groove to permit the flow of saliva
