Cecropia moth caterpillar. Caterpillar of the cecropia silkworm moth (Hyalophora cecropia) on a leaf. As the caterpillar grows,it molts its skin, with each stage between a molt being known as an instar. This caterpillar is in its fourth instar. The caterpillar has six red and yellow appendages on its head. The rest of the body is covered in yellow and blue appendages. All of these appendages bear black spikes. There is little understanding of the purpose of the appendages but they may be a mimicry device to make the non-toxic caterpillar resemble a poisonous animal or a toxic plant | |
