| Monarch butterfly pupation. Chrysalis of a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) hanging from a leaf. After building up energy reserves,the monarch larva pupates and changes into a butterfly. This pupa is new,indicated by its yellow-green colour. Inside the chrysalis the cells of the larva will undergo extensive re- ordering,to form the body of the adult insect. Monarchs are migratory butterflies native to North America. Many millions migrate to the southern USA and Mexico for the winter. They spend this period in semi-hibernation,before mating in the spring and laying the eggs from which the caterpillar larvae hatch | |
