This image is a colorized composite of a nuclear medicine lung scan. This scan, which involves injecting a radio-isotope into the bloodstream,is used to examine blood flow in the lungs and is often performed to determine if the patient has Pulmonary Emboli (blood clots trapped in the pulmonary arteries). These blood clots often form in the legs or pelvis, become dislodged, then travel through the veins to the pulmonary arteries and the lungs. Pulmonary Emboli is often treated with blood thinners such as heparin or coumadin. Sometimes a filter device is placed in the large vein in the abdomen to catch the blood clots before they have a chance to get to the lungs | |
