LIBRARY Blood clotting. Artwork of the formation of a blood clot following a tear (centre left) to the endothelial lining of a blood vessel. The tear must be sealed to prevent blood leaking out into surrounding tissues. Platelets (blue) bind to coagulation factor VIII (yellow) to plug the gap. Their adhesion to one another and to the wall of the blood vessel is mediated by von Willebrand factor (white). Eventually an insoluble mesh of fibrin protein and platelets will plug the gap and allow the endothelium lining to repair. Once | |
