This coronal (frontal) reconstruction from a spiral CTA of the chest was obtained during the evaluation for a possible pulmonary embolus (PE). This is also called PE protocol CTA chest. This image shows normal pulmonary arteries. CTA means CT angiography. This is obrained using a large volume of intravenous contrast and spiral CT technique. It is done for a variety of conditions including the assessment for pulmonary emboli which are blood clots which usually form in the legs and pelvis which travel in the veins to the pulmonary arteries within the chest where they lodge and cause decrease oxygen extraction in the lungs.
