The head of the patient is secured in a brace to prevent movement; the green laser is aimed using a retinal camera (at right),and its beam is delivered in a series of pulses. Lasers have a variety of uses in ophthalmic eye surgery,including photo-cauterisation of blood vessels in retinopathy,and in the treatment of detached retinas. Such treatments do not usually require anaesthesia,and may be performed on an out-patient basis
