Silicosis is a type of lung disease caused by the inhalation of particles of silica or other fine mineral particles. This causes inflammation and fibrosis (scarring) of the lining of the lungs (red). This is explained by the patient's former occupation as a miner. The lungs are also hyper-inflated,consistent with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for COPD
