Osteoarthritis. Coloured X-ray of the lower (lumbar) spine of a 76-year-old man suffering from osteoarthritis. The front of the spine is at right. Cartilage lines the joints (red) between the vertebrae (white),the small bones that make up the spine. Osteoarthritis is a disease causing the wasting of joint cartilage. It is usually associated with old age but may occur in the young as a result of injury or congenital deformity. Symptoms include pain,stiffness and swelling of the affected joints. There is no cure,although the symptoms can be relieved with drugs
