Air pollution. Discoloured Moon rises over a smoking oil refinery chimney. The colour of the moon is caused by aerosols and dust in the atmosphere. This particulate pollution scatters blue light more strongly than red light, making the Moon appear red. Refineries heat crude oil and pass it through catalytic cracking towers. These break up the heavy crude oil hydrocarbon molecules into lighter fragments. The resulting components, from heavy industrial oils and tars through to light fuels (such as petrol and kerosene) and gas,are then separated out. The various components, called fractions, are collected and shipped separately | |
