TW Hydrae protoplanetary disc. Illustration of the disc of protoplanetary material around the nearby young star TW Hydrae. The rings and gaps show where planets are forming and clearing material from the disc. This Sun-like star is located around 176 light years from Earth in the constellation of Hydra. It is th closest known protoplanetary disc. The organic molecule methyl alcohol (methanol) has been found by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in this disc. This is the first such detection of the compound in a young planet-forming disc. Image published in June 2016 | |
