Protoplanetary disc. Illustration of a young star surrounded by a protoplanetary disc in which planets are forming. Observations of such systems can be made using the the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). This reveals the complex structure of the disc,with concentric rings of gas and gaps indicating planet formation. These gaps were predicted by computer simulations,and have now been observed by ALMA for the first time. The planets shown here are not to the same scale as the protoplanetary disc
