Colour-enhanced SEM of a garden thyme (Thymus vulgaris) seed. Thyme is a low-spreading evergreen shrub native to the western Mediterranean. It grows in nature on strong roots in dry,gravelly soil on rocky ground. It is also cultivated as an aromatic herb which blooms from May to October. Related species may be grown as ornamentals and for use in the cuisine. The seeds are small and germinate quite rapidly. Image width: 1600 micrometers.
