A retina affected by proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) has developed new abnormally weak blood vessels on its surface and into the vitreous gel. These vessels rupture easily releasing blood into the vitreous causing vision obstruction. They can also leak fluid into the centre of the macula causing macular edema and blurred vision. Pan retinal photocoagulation (PRP) is sometimes used to destroy portions of the peripheral retina to reduce its need for oxygen, thus reducing the vasoproliferative stimulus. As a result, new blood vessel growth is reduced | |
