This is a thick section, cut at a right angle to the skin surface, probably 19th Century in origin and labelled 'Scalp of N. Zealand native'! If it was stained it has now completely faded and the colours result from the use of crossed polarizers and a whole wave (lambda) plate. The yellow streaks are the arrector pilae muscles which serve to make the hair 'stand on end'. Vertical section | |
