Black widow spider,Latrodectus mactans,male. The knob-like ends of the pedipalps (visible in front of head) identified it as a male. There are several species of black widows,with L. mactans being the one found is eastern and central US. The bite of the female can in rare instances be fatal to humans. Males are smaller than females with a less dangerous bite. Females are generally solid black except for a red hourglass marking on underside of abdomen. Photo Durham,NC | |
