Ophiocytium algal colony. Light micrograph of a living colony of the freshwater alga Ophiocytium maius. Ophiocytium,a member of the Xanthophyta,is a yellow-green alga. This is because it has yellow carotenoid pigments as well as green chlorophyll. The pigments are located in organelles called chloroplasts. The algae photosynthesize using these chloroplasts, deriving energy from sunlight. Differential interference contrast technique. Magnification: x125 at 35mm size | |
