Transmission electron micrograph of the bacteria Legionella pneumophila, the cause of Legionnaire's disease, showing the ultrastructure of the organism. Members of the gram negative species, they are small & elongated, with a double membrane cell envelope (seen here). The light areas within the cell cytoplasm (central elongated cell) contains the genetic material of the organism in the form of DNA fibrils. The disease obtained its name after an outbreak of 182 cases at the American Legion convention in Pennsylvania in 1976. Magnification: X10,000 at 35mm size | |
