E. coli O157 bacterium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Escherichia coli O157 bacterium,a cause of food-borne illness. This is a Gram-negative intestinal bacterium (enterobacterium) which can cause bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure,particularly in the elderly and the very young. It is found in the intestines of some cattle,and can spread to humans in contaminated beef and milk. Its transmission can be prevented by thoroughly cooking meat and pasteurising milk.
