E. coli bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an Escherichia coli bacterium. This rod-shaped Gram- negative bacterium moves using its hair-like flagellae (green). It is an enterobacter,a normally harmless inhabitant of human and animal intestines. Under certain conditions,however,it may increase in number and cause infection. Strains of E. coli are responsible for gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections. This is the K12 strain. Negatively stained. Magnification: x15,200 at 6x8.5cm size
