Newborn impala (Aepyceros melampus) nursing. This calf is only 15 minutes old. The female impala gives birth to a single calf after a gestation period of 6.5 months. The female will leave the herd to give birth alone. The calf is left to lie in long grass for the first 2 days,with its mother returning several times a day to nurse it. After this time the calf will join a creche within its mother's herd. The young play,groom and move together. It is weaned at 4.5 months and independent after 8 months.
