| Lechwe antelope (Kobus leche) female in the late afternoon sun. Lechwe are medium-sized antelopes. They inhabit swampy savannah in southern Africa and are strong swimmers. They are gregarious,forming herds of up to 25 animals. Males and females remain separate for most of the year. In the breeding season (from November to February),males are territorial and compete for access to groups of females. Lechwe feed on aquatic grasses. They are preyed on by big cats,hyenas and crocodiles. The species is considered threatened due to loss of habitat from the building of hydroelectric dams. Photographed in Moremi Reserve,Botswana | |
