Buffalo calf. Newborn African buffalo calf (Syncerus caffer) being inspected by several adult males (bulls). A buffalo calf is born after a gestation period of 10-11 months, and nurses from its mother for at least 6 months. These large herbivores are very social, living in vast herds numbering up to several thousand individuals. Adults eat mainly grass, living near forests and water, which they retreat into during the hottest parts of the day. African buffalo are found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, except in the southernmost regions. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve,South Africa | |
