Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) partially submerged in water. Hippos are large water-loving herbivores which live in and around rivers throughout southern and eastern Africa. They spend the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night they leave the water to eat fruits and grasses. Hippos live in groups of around 15 individuals, although larger groups have been seen. They are aggressive animals with little fear of humans. Fights between rival hippos are sometimes fatal. Hippos may reach over five metres in length, and can weigh up to 4500 kilograms. Photographed on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe | |
