White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) grazing. This large herbivore inhabits the grasslands and savannas of southern Sudan and South Africa. It is a solitary animal, feeding mainly on grasses, grazing with its broad lips. The white rhinoceros is fond of wallowing and often covers itself in mud, which allows it to cool off and removes parasites. The horns are believed to have aphrodisiac properties, which has led the species to be threatened by extensive hunting. Photographed in the Lapalala Wilderness reserve,South Africa | |
