White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). This large herbivore inhabits the grasslands and savannas of southern Sudan and South Africa. It is a solitary animal, feeding mainly on grasses, which it pulls up with its broad lips. It drinks water every day and often spends long periods wallowing. The horns are believed to have aphrodisiac properties, which has led to extensive hunting. The white rhinoceros now ranks amongst the most endangered species in the world.
