Black rhinoceroses or rhinos (Diceros bicornis) in open grassland. This is a female with her calf (left). The black rhino is a large herbivore which inhabits the open forests and scrub of south- eastern Africa. It is a solitary animal, although females are often accompanied by their young. Its territory always includes at least one water hole as it is fond of wallowing. Black rhinos eat shoots and leaves,as well as tree bark on occasion. They are renowned for their aggression, often charging anything perceived as a threat. Extensive hunting for their horns, which have long been thought of as an aphrodisiac, means that they are now highly endangered | |
