| Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli) with a wire snare around its neck,drinking. The snare is likely to have been set by poachers trying to catch wild animals as bush meat. The zebra is found on the grassy plains of eastern and southern Africa,living in herds of several hundred individuals. It feeds on grass,leaves and shoots. The distinctive stripes have a different pattern on each animal. One of their functions is believed to be to confuse predators as zebras flee in a tight-knit group. The zebra is preyed on by large carnivores,such as lions,but it is a fast runner and can outpace them over long distances. Photographed in Mkuzi Game Reserve,South Africa | |
