African elephant calf (Loxodonta africana) with members of its herd. An elephant calf is born after a gestation period of around 22 months, and nurses from its mother for a further 3 years. The African elephant is the largest and heaviest land animal alive today, with some individuals weighing over 7000 kilograms. Elephants are social herbivores, feeding on grass, bark and leaves, and forming herds that roam central and eastern Africa. The groups, which can contain over 30 individuals, are led by a mature female.
