| Elephant tusk. Close-up of the tusk of an African elephant (Loxodonta africana). Tusks are present in both male and female African elephants,and may reach a length of several metres in large males. They are used for fighting,digging and eating. Ivory,the outer coating of the tusks,is highly valued for use in jewellery and in medicinal remedies in some Asian cultures. It commands a high price,and many elephants are slaughtered illegally for their tusks. The African elephant,the largest living land animal,lives in the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa.
