African elephant. Male African elephant (Loxodonta africana) using its trunk to capture odour on the wind. This allows it to monitor the movements of other elephants nearby. Elephants can detect one another in this way at a range of about five kilometres. The African elephant is the largest land animal, some males (bulls) weighing over 7000 kilograms. It feeds on grass, bark and leaves, living in the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve,South Africa | |
