Lioness. Head of a female African lion (Panthera leo). Lions are sociable animals, living in prides consisting of one or two dominant males with several females and their offspring. The female members of the pride do the majority of the hunting. They hunt cooperatively, surrounding the prey before one lion goes in for the kill. Female lions can run at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour and can bring down prey much larger than themselves. The male forcibly takes a share of the food after the kill has been made. Lions are found in the savannah and scrubland of sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in Serengeti National Park,Tanzania,Africa | |
