Snarling cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). The cheetah has shorter canine teeth and weaker jaws than other big cats, meaning that it cannot chew through large bones. After making a kill it opens its prey at the belly and feeds on the viscera (organs). It hunts small gazelles and other hoofed mammals, getting as close as possible to the prey and then breaking into a very fast sprint. The cheetah is the fastest living land mammal, reaching speeds of over 110 kilometres per hour. It is found throughout non-forested areas of Africa south of the Sahara and in the Middle East from Iran to Kazakhstan. Photographed at Harnas Wildlife Reserve,Namibia | |
