| Lions (Panthera leo) relaxing in vegetation. These large carnivores are social animals,living in prides consisting of several adult females (lionesses) plus juveniles,adolescents and one or more adult males. Lions feed on large herbivores which they hunt at night or during the cooler parts of the day. The rest of their time is spent relaxing. Originally distributed in savannah and scrubland throughout Africa and southern Asia,habitat destruction and hunting have limited their range to sub-Saharan Africa and scattered areas in India.
