| Male lion. Juvenile or sub-adult male lion (Panthera leo). This large carnivore is a social animal,living in prides consisting of several adult females and their offspring plus one or more adult males. A young,sub-adult male must leave his birth pride at the age of around 3 years. After leaving,he will join a group or coalition composed of two or more young males. Eventually the coalition will oust other resident males from a pride and become dominant,gaining access to breeding females.
