Male lion (Panthera leo) feeding on the carcass of a zebra (Equus burchelli). Lions are social carnivores, living in prides consisting of one or two dominant males and several females and their offspring. The lionesses do almost all of the pride's hunting, catching large herbivores which the male then forcibly removes and consumes. It has been estimated that a male lion catches only 12% of the total amount of food which he eats. P. leo is found in savannah and scrubland throughout sub-Saharan Africa and in scattered areas in India. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve,South Africa | |
