Lioness sharpening claws. Female lion (Panthera leo) sharpening her claws on a tree trunk. All of a lion pride's hunting is performed by the females, the male forcibly taking his own share after the kill has been made. The lioness hunts by ambush and uses her sharp claws to grip onto the skin of her prey when close enough, dragging it to the ground. P. leo was originally found in savannah and scrubland throughout Africa and southern Asia. Habitat changes and hunting have restricted its range to sub-Saharan Africa and to scattered areas in India.
