Flock of black skimmers (Rhynchops niger) in flight. This seabird inhabits coastal regions of North and South America, with northern populations heading to tropical regions during the winter. It takes its name from its unusual feeding technique: it flies low over the water surface with its elongated lower mandible skimming through the water. When it touches a fish or crustacean it snaps its bill shut, capturing its prey. The black skimmer can reach a length of around 50 centimetres, with a 125 centimetre wingspan.
