Macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) with its chick (right). The breeding season is from October to November, with a clutch of two eggs. The second egg and chick is larger, and usually the only one that survives. In other penguin species it is the first egg that is larger. A macaroni father broods and guards the chick while the female brings food. The chick becomes independent at 60-70 days old. This penguin stands about 70 centimetres tall, weighing 5-6 kilograms. It is found on Antarctic and subantarctic coasts, feeding mostly on krill. Photographed on Bird Island,South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean | |
