Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) adult feeding a 3-week-old chick by regurgitating fish or krill. Gentoo penguins normally lay two eggs in early spring, incubating them for about 36 days and rearing the chicks throughout the summer. This chick will be independent from its parents by the autumn. The chicks and eggs are preyed on by brown skuas. Gentoos breed on the Antarctic peninsula and subantarctic islands. They grow up to 70 centimetres tall and can weigh up to 6 kilograms. Gentoos were extensively hunted for their skins and oil,but are now protected and the population is stable. Photographed at Signy Island,South Orkney Islands | |
