Macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) moulting. This individual has unusually pale colouring; the face and back are normally bluish-black in colour. This marine bird is found on the edge of Antarctica and on subantarctic islands. It feeds mostly on krill with some squid, fish and crustaceans. It nests in large colonies, laying two eggs per season. Unusually, the first egg is smaller and much less likely to hatch successfully than the second. Both parents incubate in shifts, then the male broods the chicks while the female gathers food. Moulting takes place at the end of the breeding season and lasts about 25 days. Photographed on Marion Island,South Africa | |
