Japanese pit viper (Gloydius, formerly Agkistrodon, blomhoffi) moving across rocks. This venomous, nocturnal snake has a broad triangular head that contains heat-sensitive organs, which take the form of small pits. These organs contain membranes sensitive to infrared radiation,so the snake can detect prey whose body temperatures are as little as a fraction of a degree higher or lower then the surrounding envionment. This snake is known as mamushi in Japanese. Photographed in Kedrovaja Pad Nature Reserve,Primorsky Territory,Russia | |
